(Based on Our Real-World Experience with Hail & Wind Claims in MD & PA)
When a major hailstorm or wind event hits, the true test of a homeowner insurance company begins.
As an exterior contractor specializing in roof and siding replacement claims, we regularly meet with adjusters in the field throughout our service area, including:
Maryland
Anne Arundel County
Baltimore County
Carroll County
Cecil County
Frederick County
Harford County
Howard County
Montgomery County
Pennsylvania
Chester County
Lancaster County
York County
This article reflects our personal experience handling exterior replacement claims (roofing, siding, gutters, trim, shutters) specifically related to hail and wind damage in these counties. There are many types of claims in the insurance world — plumbing losses, fire, theft, liability, etc. — but this ranking is based solely on our niche: storm-related exterior damage.

Important Disclaimer
This list is not a comprehensive ranking of all insurance companies, nor does it reflect performance on all types of claims. It is based solely on:

Insurance policies vary widely, and individual experiences may differ depending on policy type, endorsements, deductibles, and specific claim circumstances.
JP Construction is not an insurance company, nor are we an insurance seller or producer, nor do we work for any insurance company. We are not affiliated in any way with the insurance companies listed above, and we are not being compensated in any way to promote them.
Based on our 21+ years in the industry, here are the top five homeowner insurance companies we’ve had consistently positive experiences working with.
1️⃣ Amica Mutual Insurance
Founded: 1907
Phone (Quotes): 1-800-242-6422
Website: Amica.com
U.S. News Ranking: 1st, 4.9 Stars
Amica has built a strong reputation nationally, and our field experience aligns with that. While we have not had a ton of dealings with them, I cannot recall i single negative outcome involving them. Their adjusters are fair and generally give the benefit of the doubt to the customer when assessing hail and wind claims. They are also fast and friendly, and they hire quality third-party adjusting firms. On top of all of this, they are largely considered on of the more affordable companies
2️⃣ Chubb
Founded: 1882
Phone (Quotes): 1-800-682-4822
Website: Chubb.com
U.S. News Ranking: 6th, 4.2 Stars
In our experience and per their reputation, Chubb is consistently one of the top claim handlers in the industry. With Chubb, you get what you pay for. As one of the more pricey options, they always seem to favor the insured and are known for their no-hassle and prompt adjusting services. If money wasn't an option, they'd be ranked number one.
3️⃣ The Philadelphia Contributionship
Founded: 1752
Phone (Quotes): 1-800-873-4552
Website: 1752.com/
U.S. News Ranking: N/A
How is this for a hidden gem? A relatively unknown carrier, The Philadelphia Contributionship is actually the oldest insurance company in the United States, founded by none other than Ben Franklin himself (true story!). Within our service area, we’ve found their claim evaluations to be consistently fair, their adjusters typically being very reasonable third-party outfits. By the way, they are also known for being among the most affordable, despite not offering car insurance.
4️⃣ State Farm
Founded: 1922
Phone (Quotes): 1-800-STATE-FARM (1-800-782-8332)
Website: StateFarm.com
U.S. News Ranking: 3rd, 4.5 Stars
As one of the largest insurers in the country, State Farm handles a high volume of claims. In our experience across MD and PA storm events, their adjusters are generally fair and follow clear and consistent internal guidelines. While every claim is unique, we’ve worked on many successful exterior replacements with State Farm policies.
Some people may be surprised to see this ranking. This is a good time to remind the reader that we only perform exterior replacements, so we cannot speak to other claims. Within the exterior replacement sector, we focus extensively on aluminum siding replacements. Over the years, no one has been more consistent on their matching policy when it comes to discontinued/unmatchable siding replacements than State Farm.
5️⃣ Travelers
Founded: 1853
Phone (Quotes): 1-800-842-5075
Website: Travelers.com
U.S. News Ranking: 7th, 4.1 Stars
Travelers has long-standing experience in property insurance. When dealing with hail and wind claims in our counties, we’ve typically found their adjusters to be professional, unbiased, and relatively fair. As a MD and PA exterior replacement contractor since 2005, when a customer tells us they have Travelers, we generally consider that a good thing.
Honorable Mentions: Mutual Benefit, Donegal Mutual, Liberty Mutual/Ohio Casualty/Safeco, Farmers, Foremost, AAA
We used US News and World Report's homeowner insurance rankings for comparison, and there are many similarities among our lists. However, we strongly disagree with at least a couple of their other top-ranked insurance companies.
Aside from the companies we've likely left off because we simply forgot about them, most companies not listed here are ones that we haven't had many (or any) dealings with, or companies that have, based on our experience, too often been difficult to work with, have acted in bad faith, have denied obvious storm damage, have provided poor customer service, or any of the above.
Some of those companies also tend to provide policies in which there is no coverage for code upgrades and/or in which the carrier only pays a depreciated value for roofing damage. Unfortunately, most people don't even know this about their policies until they submit a claim and find out the hard way that they weren't covered the way they thought they were.
Regardless of which homeowners insurance company you have, the outcome of any given claim is most strongly correlated to the type and extent of damages. This is why, if you're not sure, it helps to have an experienced exterior contractor give you their honest assessment of your situation prior to submitting a claim.
