July 5, 2026 Carroll County Hail Storm: Finksburg, Reese & Hampstead Hit by Hail

On the evening of July 5, 2026, a severe thunderstorm produced multiple reports of large hail across Carroll County, Maryland, including the Finksburg, Reese and Hampstead areas.


The three hail reports occurred within approximately 16 minutes of one another, beginning near Finksburg and progressing north toward Hampstead. Reported hail ranged from 1 inch (quarter-sized) to 1.25 inches (half-dollar-sized).


The most significant report came from just southwest of Hampstead, where 1.25-inch hail was accompanied by extensive tree damage and evidence of a significant downburst.


For homeowners throughout this portion of Carroll County, the storm is worth remembering. Hail damage to roofing and siding isn't always obvious from the ground — and an official hail report represents a location where hail was observed and reported, not the outer boundary of where hail actually fell.



Finksburg: 1-Inch Hail Reported Around 7:00 PM

Reported hail: 1.00 inch (quarter-sized)

Time: Approximately 7:00 PM

Location: Approximately 1 mile west-northwest of Finksburg, Maryland


The first of the three reports came from the Finksburg area, where approximately 1-inch hail was observed around 7:00 PM.


Quarter-sized hail can potentially damage exterior building materials, with the likelihood of damage depending on factors including hail density, wind speed, roof age and the material being struck.


Homes with aluminum siding are particularly worth examining because impacts can leave permanent dents that aren't necessarily noticeable when looking straight at the wall. Gutters, downspouts, metal flashing and other softer exterior metals can also provide evidence of hail impacts.


Reese Area: Another 1-Inch Hail Report Minutes Later

Reported hail: 1.00 inch (quarter-sized)

Time: Approximately 7:07 PM

Location: Approximately 1 mile south-southeast of Reese, Maryland


Approximately seven minutes later, another 1-inch hail report was recorded near Reese, between the Finksburg and Westminster/Hampstead areas.


The proximity and timing of these reports help illustrate why it's important not to look at a storm report as though hail occurred at only one point on a map. Official storm reports tell us where someone actually observed and reported hail. They don't necessarily tell us everywhere hail fell.

Homes located between reported locations — or several miles away from them — may also have experienced hail.


Hampstead: 1.25-Inch Hail and Significant Wind Damage

Reported hail: 1.25 inches (half-dollar-sized)

Time: Approximately 7:16 PM

Location: Approximately 3 miles southwest of Hampstead, Maryland


The largest reported hail from the Carroll County event occurred approximately three miles southwest of Hampstead, where hail reached an estimated 1.25 inches in diameter — roughly half-dollar size.


This report is particularly significant because hail wasn't the only severe weather observed.


In the vicinity of the 300 block of Paper Mill Drive, approximately a dozen trees were reportedly snapped or uprooted at one residence, with numerous additional trees down in the surrounding area. The storm report indicated the damage was likely associated with a significant downburst.


The combination of 1.25-inch hail and powerful thunderstorm winds is important when evaluating possible property damage.


Strong winds can drive hail into vertical surfaces rather than simply allowing it to fall onto a roof. That means siding, window screens, fascia, gutters, downspouts and other elevations of a home can show impacts in addition to the roof.

Within approximately 16 minutes, large hail was reported at three locations across this portion of Carroll County.


But there is an important distinction homeowners should understand:

These points on a map aren't the boundaries of the hail storm.


Storm reports document places where hail was actually observed and reported. There can be substantial areas between official reports where hail occurred but nobody submitted a report.


That's one reason your house can be located outside a plotted hail-report marker and still have experienced the same storm.


Could Your Carroll County Home Have Hail Damage?

If you live in Hampstead, Westminster, Reese, Finksburg or the surrounding Carroll County area and remember the July 5 storm, there are several exterior components worth checking.


On the roof, hail can damage asphalt shingles without immediately causing a leak. Depending on the severity of an impact, hail can disturb the protective granule surface and damage the asphalt mat underneath.


Gutters, downspouts, roof vents and other metal components can sometimes provide more obvious evidence that hail struck the property.

And if your house has aluminum siding, pay particular attention to it. Hail impacts on aluminum siding can leave small permanent dents that are surprisingly difficult to see. In many cases, the dents become obvious only when sunlight hits the siding at the proper angle. That's why a homeowner can walk around a house after a storm, see nothing unusual, and assume the siding wasn't affected.


Don't Assume No Leak Means No Damage

One of the biggest misconceptions about hail damage is that a damaged roof should immediately leak. That's not necessarily the case.


Hail damage is caused by the impact itself. A roof can sustain damage during a storm and continue keeping water out. The concern is whether those impacts have shortened the useful life of the roofing system or compromised individual shingles.


The same principle applies to siding. Aluminum siding can continue performing its basic function while still having permanent cosmetic hail damage.
