Though there's still some snow still on the ground as this post gets written, it will soon be heating up, Spring will arrive, and once again a new storm will be upon us. Not everyone knows that it hails mainly during the late Spring and Summer months throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania. Though hail is indeed a type of ice, it is not a winter phenomenon.

Hailstorms don't typically last long, but it doesn't take much time for a severe hailstorm to cause extensive damage to the exterior of homes in Maryland or Pennsylvania.

Hail usually occurs within special cases of severe thunderstorms. So, during many of the upcoming thunderstorms that will likely occur in May, June, July, August, and even September of 2026, there will also likely be warnings of high winds and hail, and within certain locations, it will indeed hail.

How Hail Damages Your Home

Most hail that occurs in Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania is small, but we get our fair share of larger hails as well, with some hail being the size of golf balls, or larger. Needless to say, hail of this size can and does damage exteriors of homes: roofing, siding, gutters, trim capping, shutters, and sometimes even windows.

  • Roofing

Hail damage to asphalt (3-tab or architectural) roofing looks like a bunch of impression marks on the shingles. These are the spots where hail struck the shingle to the extent that a certain amount of the asphalt granules were removed from the shingle. If you have sufficient hail impressions on your roof, it is damaged and requires replacement.

  • Siding

Hail damage to siding in Maryland and Pennsylvania typically means damage to aluminum or vinyl siding. Hail of 1 inch or even smaller can damage aluminum siding by making dents along certain elevations of a home. For vinyl siding, it generally takes a larger hailstone to damage it. Vinyl doesn't dent as such, but large hail could cause holes or cracks along panels of certain elevations of the siding.

  • Gutters/Trim Capping

Gutters and trim capping are almost always some type of aluminum product and can therefore both become dented rom hail. Older shutters can be aluminum as well, and are therefore also susceptible to denting, but most shutters are a form of vinyl. Again, it takes larger hail to damage vinyl products, but severe hail can crack vinyl shutters, especially if of the louvered variety.

  • Windows

Cracks or holes in windows can occur, but this is rare. Very large dense hail is required to break modern windows, but it's not impossible, and those types of storms have affected MD and PA in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

Prior Storms in MD and PA Serviced by JP Construction

In Maryland, Harford County, Carroll County and Anne Arundel County saw the most hailstorm action in 2025. Carroll County saw some severe storms in 2025 as well. We have serviced many homes that sustained roofing and siding damage from those storms. We also serviced Fredrick County in 2018-2019 and Anne Arundel County in 2020-2024.

In Pennsylvania, we serviced York County many moons ago in 2008 when a large storm went through that area of Southern/Southeastern PA. After a large storm in 2014, we worked extensively in Chester County. That was the same year that a severe storm swept though the Reading area of PA which was large enough to cause holes and cracks in windows. And, it seems like every other year that Lancaster County gets hit. We've worked in that area since 2006. Owner Joe Paoletti even lived in Lancaster for a few years from 2006-2008.

Much of our work throughout these areas have been focused on the replacement of damaged aluminum siding. But we have also performed plenty of roofing and gutter replacements as well. Every storm, neighborhood and house is different.

Where will it storm in 2026?

No one can predict exactly where a storm will hit, but with modern tracking technology and services, when it does hail, people know about it. Maybe it will hail in Montgomery County. JP Construction Services Owner, Joe Paoletti, grew up in Poolesville, MD, and went to high school in the Potomac/Bethesda area. If a large storm goes through that area, many of the larger roofs in the county could sustain substantial damage. Many of these roofs consist of high-end designer architectural shingles, or other specialty roofing shingles.

Maybe Howard County will see some hailstorms in 2026. Laurel and Columbia are loaded with neighborhoods that have houses with aluminum siding. If hail affects these areas, there could be a tremendous amount of insurance-approved siding replacements that take place.

Or, maybe we'll continue to see some of the more recent hailstorm hotbeds stay in the line of fire. In Harford County, Fallston is a town not far from Bel Air (which got hit in 2025) with large homes. If these roofs get struck by hail, roof replacement may be necessary.

Maybe Millersville gets hit this year. With larger homes, including plenty with aluminum siding, a storm that goes through Millersville and other parts of Anne Arundel County could spur a siding replacement frenzy.

Closing Remarks

In an effort to help potential customers find information about hail events in their area, we've decided to track and post all relevant hail events. We will update this page for every hailstorm that occurs in 2026 in any of our MD and PA service area counties.

We will only be tracking and posting hail events documented at 1 inch or greater. We'll be using NOAA's website as the primary source for this.

Stay tuned for future 2026 hailstorm updates!
